So This Is Goodbye

The apostles are sittin' in their swings saying, "I'd sell off my savior"

All the people you knew were the actors.

I've hit one of those low places, rock-bottom in a tiger-pit of loneliness (and hyphens!). I really feel inexplicably bad. I feel awful.

I've drove back from Anthony's tonight on Cleveland Avenue and passed the huge open fields that have opened around Polaris ever since they cut down all the trees to make room for corporate headquarters, ATMs, and ... dead space. Except that the businesses haven't moved in yet. There's a little bridge in the middle of the green that is lit up at night. It's impossibly stupid: a little bridge in a fake lake lit up with those little ambient lights that turn it into a bridge from anywhere. Except that its in the middle of a field. A drunken courtier waiting for his lover by moonlight. It's almost boring.

Sic Transit Gloria.

I'm a trillion miles away. Will you get this letter?

I was originally going to write this post the first week of Spring Quarter, but I wanted make sure all my grades got in before I officially declared myself to feel as optimistic and thrilled as I actually do. My anthropology grade was a little slow in getting to the registrar.

So, anyway, this is the spring of my highest joys (as opposed to the winter of our discontent). I've finally declared as a major in East Asian Languages and Civilizations and I may be taking on a minor in English. I am going to China for twelve weeks this summer, studying in Beijing and volunteering in Hefei. I feel like I'm getting more proficient and comfortable with Chinese with each passing day (I've had a lot of recent dreams in Chinese; granted, I didn't actually understand everything being said by the characters in my dreams, but it did happen). The Chicago Weekly has improved tenfold since the beginning of this year: we're online, we have an expanded staff, a clear editorial hierarchy, a set style guide, an increased coverage area, and a very, very, very tight-knit staff. I'm writing for Newcity ... a leading city-wide arts publication ... as a sophomore in college. I'm taking three of the best classes I've ever taken at the University of Chicago. Jen is awesome. And I'm always finding new reasons to love rock and roll.

I feel like Heather must have a year ago--and she probably still does (of whom I was honestly extremely jealous and happy for at the same time. She had so much awesome stuff going for her. Her life is still rockin': she's rockin UT, working in Chicago this summer, and learning Swahili). I don't want to jinx how good life feels right now.
